Timing Belt & Timing Chain Replacement

Timing belts and chains synchronize the crankshaft and camshafts. On many engines a broken timing belt causes immediate and severe internal damage. Replacement on schedule is essential — and far less expensive than a destroyed engine.

Common symptoms

  • "My timing belt is due according to the service interval"
  • "I hear rattling from the engine on cold start"
  • "I have a check engine light related to camshaft / crankshaft timing"
  • "The engine runs rough and lacks power"

What we check

  1. 01 Service interval against vehicle mileage and age
  2. 02 Timing belt or chain condition (visible cracks, missing teeth, slack)
  3. 03 Tensioner, idler pulleys and water pump (often replaced together)
  4. 04 Cam / crank correlation codes if present

Timing belts on most engines should be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles, depending on the manufacturer's schedule. The water pump and tensioner are commonly replaced at the same time because they share the labor.

Timing chains do not have a fixed replacement interval but can stretch or wear over time, often signaled by a rattle on cold start or timing-related fault codes.

A note on shop equipment

Timing belt and timing chain replacement is one of the few services that may require a shop for some platforms. After reviewing your vehicle we will tell you whether it can be done on-site.
